Core Mission & Vision
The Preparatory Office of the National Museum of Modern Art Tainan (MOMA Tainan) is tasked with establishing Taiwan’s first national museum dedicated to modern art. Its mission is to deepen and reinterpret the narrative and value of Taiwan’s art history. Looking ahead, MOMA Tainan aims to become a comprehensive platform for modern Taiwanese art. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and systematic knowledge-building, the Museum seeks to open new horizons for the contemporaneity and future development of Taiwanese art.
Architectural Features & Spaces
Designed collaboratively by Shigeru Ban Architects (Japan) and architect Joe Shih, the Museum draws inspiration from the royal poinciana, transforming its form into a series of pentagonal structures that echo Tainan’s natural and cultural landscape. The main building is composed of vertically stacked and subtly staggered square volumes. With 2,700 square meters of exhibition space, the Museum features galleries, an interdisciplinary performance hall, a children’s art center, a museum shop, and additional facilities.
Collections & Permanent Exhibition Planning
Beginning with resource integration, the Preparatory Office focuses on the period from 1895 to the 1960, advancing both collection development and research. It is actively engaged in early-stage planning for the Museum’s permanent exhibition, seeking out Taiwanese modern and contemporary artworks dispersed across Taiwan and abroad. By expanding thematic perspectives and deepening the overall narrative of Taiwan’s art history, the Museum aims to construct a more complete, multidimensional understanding of Taiwan’s artistic heritage.
Education, Outreach, & Social Responsibility
Education, Outreach, & Social Responsibility The Museum prioritizes public engagement through educational programs, including collaborations with academic institutions, public lectures, workshops, and art education courses. Open to visitors of all ages, these initiatives seek to broaden access to arts education, create shared aesthetic experiences, and build public understanding and recognition of Taiwan’s modern art.
Research & Talent Development
MOMA Tainan is committed to building a dedicated research platform for modern Taiwanese art, cultivating future scholars in art history as well as museum professionals. Through academic journals, monographs, research reports, and related publications, the Museum advances scholarship and fosters deeper public exploration of Taiwan’s artistic development.
International Vision & Collaboration
MOMA Tainan is developing plans for international partnerships and museum-to-museum exchanges, including exhibition collaborations and institutional alliances. These efforts support curatorial exchange, academic dialogue, and greater global visibility for Taiwanese art and culture.
